I had the opportunity to assist Compassion International in a short video for their Haiti earthquake relief efforts. Dedric Terry partnered with me (he created the beautiful score and sound design) and we were given a script and some photos-our challenge was to make something compelling that would remind all of us that we can’t quickly dismiss the tragedy over there-they still need so much help to rebuild and care for all of those new orphans.

This video is dedicated to our good friend David Hames-who is still missing in Haiti-we continue to hope for a miracle!

Just finished this drama/suspense book trailer for New York Times Best Selling author Ted Dekker and Erin Healy. This was a great challenge from an FX standpoint. Tons of green screen work, motion tracking and matte painting to bring it all together. A great script written by the author Erin Healy made this a fun piece to work on.

    New work

It’s been awhile since my last post…but there’s good reason for that…like being busy with new projects. I think the most significant entry as of late is the Parenting Priorities video we just finished for Focus on the Family. It was a huge new challenge for me as a creative to rely solely on video instead of the usual mix of video and motion graphics. I had a great script and some convincing actors and actresses to get things started. I think it’s SO important to have a story and goal in mind with video. There is a lot of video on the web…and I think a small percentage of it is worth our time. Hopefully we accomplished the ‘worthwhile’ part of the equation with this video.

Got a ton of new projects going on right now. I’m finishing up a new image for the story series. This one is set on a snowy landscape where an explorer is discovering a new civilization. I went upto Pikes Peak a few months ago to shoot most of the background pieces-it was absolutely gorgeous-everything was snow covered yet it was about 50 degrees so it was easy to hike without freezing to death on the top of a 14,000 foot mountain:) More on this image soon.
The other project that’s keeping me busy is a new motion graphics piece for Focus on the Family. It’s for a movie review video and it’s the intro animation for it. The animation style for this is very kinetic and busy-where you could see the movie a bunch of times and really only FEEL what’s going on-not actually see all of it. Anyway, we’ll see if it is a success or not…

OneI had the pleasure of doing my first motion graphics project with Compassion—a great organization that releases children from poverty around the world. They recently celebrated their millionth child being sponsored and hired me to do a video short. The goal was to create a fast paced, kinetic animation that described the history of Compassion through the use of heavily animated type and imagery. Compassion’s brand has a very organic, distressed look and I wanted to retain that look throughout. One of the ways I did that was to have the photos ‘bleed’ onto the page instead of a smooth fade in. Using a variety of inkblot and time lapse flower video footage, I layered those together to create ‘masks’ that revealed each photo.
Fortunately, the project was well received and I’m now creating an edit of the original that’s a little less specific at the end so as to reach a broader audience. I’ll post it soon. In the meantime, you can check out the original by clicking on the thumbnail or checking out the motion section here.

Another reason I switched to a WordPress platform is to create community. I’d love to hear from you. What do and don’t you like? I’d also welcome some of your ideas for my Once Upon A Story series. I’m considering stories from all different times and settings, not just fairy tales. I look forward to your thoughts.

It’s been an exciting week. After many years of doing photo illustrations and wondering if God has a further purpose for them, I feel like He’s given me an idea.

Beginning with Little Red Riding Hood (pictured above) I’m going to dedicate the next year to creating a series of story images. There are some incredible stories out there that have been painted many times but have not received a photo realistic treatment that my style brings. These stories inspire my kids and they inspire me. They have layers of meaning and teach us how to live and cope with pain and they often point to our Creator. I’ll keep you posted on my progress but my three year old daughter insists that we do Sleeping Beauty next…

Thanks for visiting! I’m stoked about this new site. I improved navigation by moving it all to the top with convenient drop downs and changed things up so you can click less often to see new work. I made the images a bit smaller so they load faster while fitting in some of the more narrow browser windows on laptops and mobile devices. Finally, I’m now running this on a WordPress platform as it’s more iPhone friendly.
