I had the opportunity to work on a book series that retell classic fairy tales. The series, currently on book number two, has turned into an award winning one for author Melanie Dickerson. She was recently featured in a USA today article and she mentions Magnus Creative. Read it here

If you check out my new image titled ‘The Potter’s Field‘ you’ll notice something different about it. While it hopefully looks realistic, it also has an idealism to the landscape that would’ve have been impossible to photograph…on my budget at least! And while photography is always the first tool I run to for image creation, 3D is becoming more and more useful for filling in the production gaps. I’ve been using Vue for about 4 years now. It’s a digital nature tool in which you can grow your own grass and carve your own mountains-whatever you can dream up really. It has taken 4 years to finally learn the tool well enough to where I’ve actually wanted to use it in one of my photo illustrations, but my hope is that you’ll see more of it. Thanks as always for looking and reading!

I had the honor of working with Compassion International again on another advocacy video. The goal for this video was to inform viewers about how poverty intimately affects children and to gently nudge folks to take the plunge into child sponsorship. We built a story and concept around the idea that our excuses for not sponsoring a child are insignificant when compared to the problem or poverty. We took a parable approach to the video which allowed for an interesting take on how God pursues each of us to take part in His plans.

‘Passion’ means suffering as I learned in my research while creating these images. The climax of Jesus’ life meant incredible suffering and yet it also meant the most victorious moment in history. He conquered the grave and became the final and perfect atoning sacrifice for humanity.
Creating these images was a career highlight for me. I’ve always wanted to put my take on these incredible moments in history. While I’m not sure I’ve added a significantly different spin on all of them, I am excited about the resurrection image as I’ve not seen something like it before. I was aiming at a supernatural shedding of the burial cloth He was wearing—like we’re witnessing the moment He literally ‘broke free’ from death. I also wanted it to feel hugely heroic as I can’t think of a more heroic and victorious moment in history.
This series represents the longest period of time I’ve spent on three images—almost 2 months. Each one was reworked at least once as I would walk away from the image and then look at it the next morning saying ‘What was I thinking!’
John Bolin, the creator of The Thorn, was an awesome creative to partner with on these images. We had a huge wealth of talented performers from the stage production for each of the characters in the images. There was also a bunch of great wardrobe pieces and some talented make-up work by Rebecca and Sue.
Thanks for reading!

After many years dreaming about doing images based on the Bible, I finally got a chance at creating three images around the passion of Christ! I’m working with the creator of the stage production, The Thorn, and will post the final images soon. It’s been a great challenge working on these pictures…and a little intimidating with the subject matter being the Son of God. We ended up tackling the Garden of Gethsemane, The Cross and the Resurrection. Three images that have been painted thousands of times. Hopefully because these are photo illustrations, it will add something new to these iconic images from history-we’ll see:)

We were blessed to have a restful Christmas holiday and new year. My inspiration over the holidays came from a strange place…Harry Potter. I’d never seen the movies but I was blown away by the cinematography and the matte painting in some of the movies-very beautiful stuff and they challenged me to rethink the way I light my images and finish them-perhaps reveal a little less and leave a bit more to the imagination and yet still make room for my ‘fill the canvas’ approach to making images. We’ll see how it goes. Happy New Year-may you be blessed!
